Introduction of car parking charges at Royal Quays Marina

Important changes

Visitors to Royal Quays Marina should be aware of some important changes we are making to the marina car parks. Parking charges will apply from Monday 24 January and will be applicable 24 hrs. Marina Berth Holders, tenants and bona fide customers will continue to park for free, but members of the public and non-berth holders will need to pay to park.

The above plan shows the areas to which this will apply and the charges applicable. There will be a two-tiered charging system with a good value ‘standard’ tariff area alongside the East Quay, and a higher cost ‘premium’ car park accessed from the roundabout closet to the marina office.

We are introducing this change as we believe this is the best way of trying to balance the needs of marina users, and ensure that they can get parked, whilst continuing to offer parking to the general public so that they can enjoy what the area has to offer. All car park areas around the marina are under of control of boatfolk Marinas Ltd, and whilst we have previously allowed free public use, there is increasing pressure on space as the marina grows and becomes more popular with the visiting public. In particular the remodelling of the car parks to accommodate the Port of Tyne’s widening of The Northumbrian Quay cruise terminal has reduced the number of car park spaces. Revenue generated from ad-hoc visitors and day-trippers will contribute to the costs of providing, maintaining and managing the car parks and the general marina estate.

Visitors to The Lock Café will be able to park for up to 2 hrs free by obtaining a voucher when you pay at the till, but this will only apply to the ‘standard’ car park. The voucher should be redeemed at the ticket machine. Blue Badge holders may park for up to 3 hrs in the standard car park by scanning your Blue Badge.

The car park will be managed on our behalf by Premier Park Ltd. It will be controlled by Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras (ANPR) which record your vehicles registration number on arrival and departure. Before leaving you should enter your vehicle registration number into the payment machine and it will calculate your parking fee. The machines will accept payment by debit card, cash or on your phone using the Just Park app. Those users entitled to park for free will be pre-registered and will be recognised by the camera system. Registered users may park both the premium and standard car park areas.

Users of Electric and PHEV’s are now able to charge their vehicles using the six recently installed  Electric Vehicle charging points (22KW/32 amp). These are available for use by marina users and the general public alike (pay via VendElectric app) and are situated alongside where the bow of the Earl of Zetland used to lie.

If you have any other questions about car parking on site, please don’t’ hesitate to contact the Marina Reception on 0191 2728282 or e-mail royalquays@boatfolk.co.uk
