What’s in your tank.

With warm, sunny weather just around the corner, it’s a good time to get your boat ready for the water.

This means doing all the usual stuff like giving the hull a fresh coat of antifoul, servicing the engine, washing the decks, and checking the rigging.

But there’s one more thing to keep on top of - making sure your fuel system is in good shape.

Since we’re on the topic, I thought I’d tell you a bit about the fuel we supply here and how you can store it effectively to keep it in the best condition.

We take the quality of our fuel seriously. It comes from a trusted supplier and goes through rigorous filtering and testing.

This includes weekly checks and monthly tests by an independent lab, so you can be sure it’s top-notch when dispensed.

Here at Bangor Marina, our petrol includes 10% renewable ethanol, and our diesel contains FAME biodiesel, which meets strict standards for cleaner emissions and a smaller carbon footprint.

However, these modern biofuels don’t have the same shelf life as petrol and diesel produced in the past because they are hygroscopic in nature which means they can absorb moisture from the air.

To help you keep your boat’s fuel system up to scratch, here are a few tips:

1. Utilise Fuel Stabilisers: Integrating fuel stabilisers into your storage protocol is essential. These stabilisers prevent fuel degradation and phase separation over time, especially during the winter season when your boat is not in regular use.  There are many fuel stabilising solution on the market and our neighbour Bosun Bobs sells ‘Fuel Set’ a concentrated fuel conditioner.

2. Regular Tank Cleaning: To mitigate the risk of sediment build-up and microbial growth, which can clog fuel systems, it is crucial to schedule regular cleaning of fuel tanks. This not only maintains the quality of the fuel but also enhances the overall safety and efficiency of your vessel. For anyone keen on keeping their fuel tanks spotless, there are products available such as the Diesel Dipper that can help remove sludge from the bottom of your tank.

3. Efficient Fuel Filters Installation: Installing high-quality fuel filters will safeguard against impurities that can harm your engine. These filters should be checked and replaced regularly to maintain optimal fuel flow and engine performance.

4. Breather Pipe Add-ons: Installing a silica gel dryer will stop the condensation from entering your tank.

Hopefully, these tips will help you keep your boat in tip-top shape.
