Attention All Boat Owners: Important Notice on Marine Flare Disposal
Over recent years, the disposal of marine flares in Northern Ireland has become increasingly challenging due to changes in carriage and storage regulations, alongside the withdrawal of the MoD Explosive Teams' routine collection service from HM Coastguard and other collection points.
Legal Restrictions and Safety Concerns:
· It is illegal to dispose of flares at sea.
· It is illegal to dump flares on land.
· Flares should only be used in emergencies. Improper disposal of marine flares can pose significant dangers and environmental harm.
Action Plan: The PSNI in collaboration with the RYA, local MLA’s and boatfolk Bangor Marina have organised a dedicated disposal day for Northern Irish boaters.
Disposal Day Details: Date: 15th June
Time: 10 am to 3 pm
Location: Bangor Marina
Message from Harbour Master Kevin Baird: "Many boaters in our community have struggled with the lack of flare disposal options. This disposal day at Bangor Marina is an excellent opportunity for boat owners to safely dispose of expired flares. We appreciate the efforts of the PSNI and RYA and MLA’s in organising this event.
Ensuring the safety of our waters and environment is a priority, and I urge all boat owners to take advantage of this service."
Important Reminder: The PSNI reminds boat owners that 'Written Police Consent' is required for the purchase of Marine Distress Pyrotechnics.
