Practice your boat handling skills

Berth Holder boat handling sessions – practical and theory

A morning session; learn or polish your skills and knowledge, whilst making friends.

Deacons Marina

Open to all Deacons berth holders, a relaxed, no-pressure morning session delivered by Mendez Marine Sea School on site, from the comfort of their rib.

Learn new skills or brush up on current knowledge, whilst making friends and enjoying a bite to eat. Emphasis will be placed on understanding when the easiest times to approach and depart your berth are, ferry gliding and general boat handling skills.

Commencing with everyone at 9am with a bacon roll and coffee, we start with theory on interpreting the Bursledon tidal curve for slack water times - when the tidal flow stops and it is easiest to move. We will also look at ferry gliding and basic principles.

We will then head on to the water for practice, in two groups, giving everyone who wants to the chance to put theory in to practice. We can provide training for a maximum of 14 people per morning session, booked on a first come, first serve basis.

You do not have to stay for the entire session and you are welcome to watch from the riverbank rather than dive for in the practical if you prefer. The rib can accommodate seven people, so we will split in to two groups for the practical.

To finish, sit back, relax and chat with a slice of home-cooked quiche and a glass of Pimms.
